Portola Fest with Type 1 Diabetes: What’s Your Dance-Floor Low Snack?
My first time raving with another person with type 1 diabetes brought a dance-floor low—and a very unexpected honey bear.
I recently went to Portola Fest in San Francisco. For the first time in my life, I raved with a fellow type 1 diabetic.
That might sound like a small thing, but finding someone on the dance floor who shares this part of life felt worth talking about. We were there for the music, and we also had type 1 diabetes in common.
A low in the middle of the dance floor
I went low in the middle of the dance floor. I had my current go-to low snack with me—but I couldn’t believe what my new friend pulled out: a full-size honey bear.
Not a tiny packet. A whole honey bear. And after the first day of partying, it was already half consumed.
The low-snack question
So now I have to ask: what is your go-to low snack on the dance floor?
Everyone has their own preferences. What do you actually carry when you head out for a night of music? Is it something that fits in a pocket, something familiar, or apparently a full-size honey bear?
Finding your people
This was my first time raving with another person with type 1 diabetes, and that’s the part of this trip I wanted to share with this community. Sometimes a connection starts with the music. Sometimes it starts with a conversation about a low snack.
The honey bear is part of my story, not a dosing recommendation. Follow your own diabetes care plan; if someone cannot safely swallow, never give them food or drink and get emergency help.
