Know the Signs

A low can look like being drunk or high. Your friends knowing the difference can save your life.

LOW (Hypo)

  • Shaking or sweating (not just from dancing)
  • Confusion, slurred speech, acting 'too wasted'
  • Pale skin, dizziness
  • Sudden mood change or irritability
  • Fast heartbeat, hunger

What to do

Give 15g of fast sugar (glucose tabs, juice, regular soda). Wait 15 minutes, recheck. If they can't swallow or pass out: use glucagon, call 911 / medical tent. Never give food to an unconscious person.

HIGH (Hyper)

  • Extreme thirst and frequent bathroom runs
  • Fatigue, blurry vision
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fruity-smelling breath
  • Deep, fast breathing (possible DKA)

What to do

Help them check glucose and ketones, drink water, and take correction insulin as they normally would. Vomiting, fruity breath or heavy breathing = get to medical immediately.

When in doubt, treat it as a low and get help. Medical staff at events are there to help, not judge.
